Welcome to the 2nd Annual Fiesta Metric Century, a 100 Km paved recreational cycling event. This event is not a race, but is a wonderful way to spend a Saturday morning and early afternoon enjoying the best of Summer cycling in San Diego County. The ride starts in the heart of San Diego's Downtown Harbor District, then proceeds south along the San Diego Bay and waterfront. The course turns east on the Sweetwater bikepath and becomes much more rural through scenic Bonita and Chula Vista. The route passes by the Olympic Training Facility, along the shores of Otay Lakes, before continuing to the turnaround point under the shady trees at Pio Pico/Thousand Trails campsite and store. The route then returns to the Start/Finish along the same route (minus the Otay Lakes/Olympic Training Facility section). Individual cyclists may elect to ride shorter distances as described on the website and on cue sheets included in rider packets.
Shadow Tour event organizers take great pride in producing memorable cycling events. The focus is on the needs of the cyclist. Rest Stops are carefully placed at key points along the course and are well-stocked. That includes all the basics of filtered water, Vitalyte, and Clif Bar energy bars, but also includes fresh Oranges, Bananas, PB&J's, Pretzels, Red Vines, Fig Newtons, Cookies, and more. To kick it up a notch, Rest Stops also boast E-Caps (salt + magnesium + potassium), Advil, Lip Balm, Sunscreen, Chamois Butt'r, Hand Sanitizer, and Portajohns. At each Rest Stop, the Start/Finish, and roving on the course, riders are supported by the Pride & Joy of the event staff: Friendly and Helpful Volunteers who are enthusiastic and thoroughly briefed.
To insure each rider is well prepared, specific ride details and timelines are provided in the Final Rider Instructions, which are posted on the website, emailed to all registered riders, and included in every participant's rider packet. Also included in the rider packet are detailed route maps, turn-by-turn instructions, and key telephone contacts. Safety is of paramount importance. Potential hazards are carefully described on the website and in the Final Rider Instructions. And where possible, road hazards are marked with signs on the course. Every Rest Stop has a First Aid Kit, spare tubes, and a full sized floor pump. A roving EMT equipped with medical supplies (including defibrillator), is also ready to respond at a moment's notice. There are also multiple SAG and Mechanic vehicles roving the course marked with orange Shadow Tour signs. Each route is well-marked with bio-degrabable day-glow arrows on the asphalt prior to each turn (with confirming arrow on other side), along with reusable signs and course markers at key turns. Certain highlights of the course are marked with signs, such as the "highest elevation", major climbs, and "Rest Stop" ahead.
The Fiesta Metric Century is designed to blend all the best of San Diego's cycling into one stress-free event. There are beautiful views of San Diego Bay, rural inland rolling hills through Bonita and Chula Vista, a serene stretch along Otay Lakes, two miles on the Sweetwater Bikepath parallel to the Sweetwater River, and an exciting downtown Start/Finish.
At the conclusion of the ride, all registered riders receive an included finishline Fiesta Mexican Buffet catered by El Indio Restaurant--a San Diego institution! There will be a DJ, live entertainment provided by Manny Cepeda and his Salsa Trio Band, a sponsor expo, highlighted by Scripps Health (Presenting Sponsor) providing free blood pressure and other health screenings, and seating for riders and guests to hang out, share a great meal with friends, and enjoy the sun and cool breezes off the San Diego Bay. Ride momentos include a custom full-color medal and commemorative pin. We think its a perfect wind-down for a fantastic summer ride!
At Shadow Tour, we believe in preserving the history for each event. Many riders have noticed that other cycling event websites eliminate virtually every trace of the previous year's event. At Shadow Tour, the continuity of every event is important, because each year is different and unique. Participant's names, cities, and number of previous Shadow Tour events are posted to the "Rider Lists" and are not deleted. The Gallery Tab has flyouts for every single previous Shadow Tour event and links to photo galleries for each ride. Riders who complete the Full Distance of the course, such as the Full Metric Century at the Fiesta Metric Century, will have their names and cities listed under the "Results & Records" tab. These results are permanently displayed and serve as a point of pride for many first-timers and veterans alike. Lastly, every event concludes with a comprehensive round-up email, describing the event, the weather conditions on the day of the ride, total number of riders, total number of full course finishers, links to the photographer services, and various stories from the ride.
If you're a returning Shadow Tour rider, thanks for your loyalty and your many referrals over the years. If this is your first event, give Shadow Tour a shot. We're confident you'll enjoy the experience!

Cyclist Levels:
The Fiesta Metric Century course is rated "easy" overall, with only one significant, but very manageable, climb of about 600 feet spread out over 2 miles. The ride is primarily affected by weather conditions, such as heat and wind, on the day of the ride. All cyclists need to assess their own level of physical conditioning, weather conditions, and course profiles when deciding what distance to ride. The course has several options marked. If needed, all riders may adjust their distance by safely executing a u-turn along the out-and-back course.
For beginner cyclists wishing to complete the full 62-miles, prepare in advance for the ride with adequate training. Insure your bicycle is in sound mechanical condition by having it tuned up and thoroughly inspected for safety at your local bike shop; to include purchasing new tires and brakes if needed. We strongly recommend starting at the early start time. Typical beginner riders will need about 5 hours, including rest stops, to ride the 62-mile route, depending on weather conditions. More advanced cyclists typically complete the entire route well under 4 hours with minimal stops. The fastest cyclists will be under 3 hours.
More experienced cyclists may be pleasantly surprised by the diverse natural scenery, not normally associated with a bike ride originating in downtown San Diego. Many veteran local riders are not aware of the outstanding bike routes through Chula Vista, such as the scenic Hunte Parkway, with wide bike lanes and Pepper Tree-lined adjacent trails--world class cycling, right in San Diego's back yard. This is also an ideal event to invite the family and friends to join you. Whether they ride, or simply explore the downtown areas of Little Italy, the San Diego Maritime Museum, the USS Midway, or the Embarkadero, many attractions are within easy walking distance of the Start/Finish.
The Fiesta Metric Century is designed to blend the best of San Diego County cycling in one stress-free event. There are beautiful views of San Diego Bay, rural inland rolling hills in Bonita and Chula Vista, a serene stretch along Otay Lakes, two miles on the Sweetwater Bikepath paralleling the Sweetwater River, and an exciting downtown Start/Finish.
The Fiesta Finishline Expo/Party features an included Mexican Buffet catered by the historic El Indio Restaurant. There's also Manny Cepeda's Salsa Trio providing lively entertainment. Presenting Sponsor, Scripps Health, will be there offering free blood pressure checks and other free health screenings. Other sponsors will also be hosting various expo booths. Finishers also receive a custom Fiesta Medallion and commemorative pin. It's all part of your reward for getting out there, doing something good for your body and soul, and enjoying the best of San Diego's summer cycling! |
SPECIAL NOTE FOR BEGINNERS AND RIDERS NEW TO SHADOW TOUR:
All Shadow Tour rides are held on routes in more remote locations. This optimizes natural scenery and minimizes vehicular traffic. As a direct consequence, some riders experience a sense of isolation and feel they have been left completely alone out on the course, because there are less urban areas or heavy traffic around them. This is normal, especially on a long and unfamiliar route. Anxiety levels also tend to rise when weather conditions make riding more difficult.
Rest assured, our courses are designed in such a way that you are never more than 9 miles (in front or to the rear) away from an on-course Rest Stop or small community along the route. Further, we have patrolling CHP support and our own roving SAG Wagons on the course continuously. There are also many cyclists riding in both directions, so you can flag one down if you need help. This does not mean we can immediately evacuate every single rider at a moment's notice -- we can't--neither can any other major ride. But we will get to you as quickly as possible if you need help.
We strongly recommend riders unfamiliar with our courses, or riders attempting their first full century or metric century, to take it "one small step at a time". At the Fiesta Metric Century, you have the freedom to ride east and, at any time, you may safely turn around and ride back west (with full Rest Stop support) to the start/finish in downtown San Diego. So if you're not sure of your level of conditioning, or if weather conditions develop out on the course, as they typically do in more remote sections of San Diego county, consider turning back early.
Our on-course resources such as a dedicated EMT, SAG vehicles, communications, and volunteers are always limited. Don't expect a Shadow Tour vehicle to pick you up the instant you feel you cannot continue--it's simply not possible. But if you feel you need help, try calling us on your cell phone, or dial 911 if it's an emergency, or flag down another cyclist or motorist, or simply ride or walk back to the nearest Rest Stop and let the volunteers know you need assistance. We'll do our best to get you back to the Start/Finish as soon as possible. Keep a level head out there. Be patient and never antagonizy motorists. Constantly assess how you're feeling. Use every single rest stop for fluids and energy products, including salt (pretzels or E-Caps) and bananas and Clif energy bars (major bonk busters). Keep an eye on the weather, your time, and how other riders are progressing. If you have any doubt, just turn back early. You have many distance options to choose from to enjoy your ride!
