FINAL RIDER INSTRUCTIONS
2009 FESTA METRIC CENTURY, Saturday, October 10, 2009

WELCOME to the inaugural Festa! Metric Century. We’re honored by your participation, thanks for joining us! For your safety, carefully read these instructions. Note: Ride takes place rain or shine.

1. Packet Pick up/Registration: Riders may pick up their rider packets or register in-person on Friday, Oct 9, at the Doubletree Hotel Downtown San Diego located at 1646 Front St, just off Interstate 5, in Little Italy (San Diego) from Noon until 8 P.M., or on Saturday, Oct 10 at the Start/Finish in the south lot of the San Diego County Offices Bld, 1600 Pacific Hwy from 6:45 - 7:45 A.M. Riders may pick up friend’s packets with written permission (such as a printed email). To speed registration on Sat morning, please arrive with full water bottles.

2. Jerseys/T-shirts: Riders who purchased a jersey on or before Aug 16, ‘09 will receive them at packet pick up. Jerseys purchased after Aug 16 will be in the 2nd production run to be mailed in Dec ‘09. T-shirts are included with registration and will be at packet pick-up.

3. Bike Inspection: All riders must individually insure their bicycle is mechanically sound and equipped with working brakes and fully serviceable wheels and tires. WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND every rider take their bicycle in for a professional tune-up and safety inspection prior to the ride. Replace any questionable components, especially tires.

4. Mechanic Support: Bike Mobile and World Cycles will be at the Start/Finish on Saturday morning. At 7:45 A.M. Bike Mobile will move to Rest Stop #1 and will later roam the course.

5. Wristbands: Please loosely affix your enclosed wristband(s) to either wrist.

Red/White/Blue: Your master pass to all rest stops. It will be marked at Rest Stop #3.
Green: Your post-ride pasta/veggie/fruit buffet pass. Will be removed when receiving meal.

6. Bib Numbers: Bib numbers (aka, helmet numbers) are assigned to each rider and posted on the shadowtour.com website under “Rider Lists”. To save time, please locate your bib number before arriving at packet pick-up. A cross-referenced alphabetical roster will also be posted.

7. Full Metric Century Finishers Recognition: Riders completing the full 60-mile route must have wristbands validated at Rest Stop #3 and check-in with the DJ at the finish to record successful completion. Names/cities of Full Metric Century Finishers will be posted online.

8. Ride Photos: Brightroom.com is providing event photography services. They post photos online by bib number, so affix the helmet sticker on the front of your helmet before the ride.

9. Helmets/Safety: Riders must wear a serviceable Snell-approved helmet at all times while riding. This is a “rules of the road” event, no roads are closed. Ride on the far right side of the road, single file, and obey all traffic laws. Never gesture at or harass vehicles in any way.

10. Red Zones: RED ZONES are potentially hazardous areas. Use EXTRA CAUTION, reduce speed to max of 20 MPH, stay as far to the right as safely possible, and always ride single file.

Red Zones for outbound & return sections of the routes:

Harbor Dr:  Watch for old railroad tracks. To safely cross, aim front wheel at 90-degree
angle (t-bone technique), if necessary, stop and walk bike over tracks.
Bikepath:  Watch for other riders and walkers in both directions. Use caution at entrances.
San Miguel Rd/Proctor Valley Rd:  Narrow roads, stay as far to right as possible. On return portion of San
Miguel Rd, watch for uneven curb cement on the descent.
Otay Lakes Rd: Higher vehicle traffic at faster speeds. Use Extreme caution, stay to right, ride single file.
Do not stop until arriving at Rest Stop #3.

11. Parking: Parking in the south lot of the San Diego County Offices Bld is free for the day to participants on a “First Come, First Served” basis. When the contracted portion of the lot is full, riders may park at a special rate of $6/day. Ace Parking will be controlling parking. In the downtown area, always park legally and don’t block residence driveways. Carpooling is strongly encouraged. No vehicles may enter or park in the Start/Finish lane of the parking lot.

12. Start Times: Start window is 7:00 – 8:00 A.M. The City of San Diego requires wave starts of approximately 50 riders, beginning at 7:00 A.M. about every 5 - 7 minutes until 8:00 A.M. We strongly recommend 60-mile riders DEPART AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.

13. Weather: Weather forecasts will be posted on the Shadow Tour website as the event nears. Temperatures will be much warmer inland, so be sure to drink lots of water at all rest stops.

14. San Diego County Waivers: Riders & volunteers must complete and sign a SD County Liability Waiver at packet pick-up. We apologize for the extra step; it’s a strict requirement.

24. Course Marshals: Course marshals are identified by Yellow Vests. Most volunteers are trained only with their station’s operation. For higher support, ask for a course marshal.
