IMPORTANT NOTE
On
Tuesday, Jan 20, '09, Shadow Tour was informed by the manufacturer of
Clif Bars of a voluntary recall of their energy bars containing peanut
butter, which could possibly be tainted with Salmonella. Some of the
bars at the Stagecoach Century are on the recall list. Clif Bar has
tested all lots and found no trace of Salmonella, nor have any cases of
food poisoning been reported. However, in an abundance of caution,
please discard all Clif Bars from the Stagecoach Century. More details
are available at the Clif Bar website.
Dear Sturdy Riders,
The
2009 Stagecoach Century is now completed and in the books. We're
pleased to report a field of 628 registered riders from 17 states and
Canada. Among the full century finishers were Kieran Fennel from Whitman, MA and Mark Greenwood from Plymouth, MN. We know all riders make a long trek to join the Stagecoach; as your host, we offer our sincere gratitude.
We
hope you enjoyed your 2009 kick-off century. For the second year in a
row, Mother Nature smiled on Stagecoach and delivered mild and sunny
conditions all along the Great Southern Overland, with afternoon
temps into the low 80's with mostly calm winds. Of course, it
wouldn't be Stagecoach without at least some sporatic windy sections!
Congratulations
are in order for riders completing the full 100 mile course. The total
was the highest since we began keeping records with 328 Full Century Finishers, click here to view the list. If you completed the Full Century and your name is missing, please email Jim (click on name) with your name and Bib Number in the subject field and the list will be updated.
The
Full Cenury Finishers list also included some of Shadow Tour's most
sturdy riders, each completing their 8th Shadow Tour event: Karen Finkelstein, Carlsbad, CA, Courtney Krehbiel, Carlsbad, CA, Amy Snyder, La Jolla, CA, and Patricia Thomas, La Jolla, CA.
Numerous
riders have sent complimentary and constructive emails praising the
outstanding work of the loyal and hard-working volunteers. Others have
offered suggestions for improvement (such as a left arrow sign at
Scissors Crossing to make the turn back onto S2). We have passed these
comments along to the appropriate individuals. We can assure you, the
volunteers from Ocotillo and Shelter Valley enjoyed being a part
of your ride experience and they take great pride and satisfaction in
meeting and exceeding your expectations.
Our Congratulations once again go out to Team Descenders (A), the 40+ Club TTT team that blazed to an overall course win and new course record of 4:59:30. Team captain, Dave Voris, 47, Dave Guidotti, 47, Rick Bienias, 45, and Dave Ernst,
41, all from San Diego, CA, used their veteran Stagecoach experience
and tight teamwork to reel in the 5 hour barrier, covering the last 3
miles in under 7 minutes!
Many newcomers to distance cycling
participated at various distances on Saturday. Well done! We
encourage you to participate in many more century rides as your riding
base, experience, and confidence build. Regardless of final distance
ridden, riders should be justifiably proud of accepting the Stagecoach
challenge. Special recognition is in order for 8-yr-old Sierra Crocker, who rode the 26-mile course on her new bicycle with her proud dad, Gary Crocker, both from El Cajon, CA.
Our good friends at Brightroom Photography are hard at work right now on your photos, shot by Matt Benedict
and his crew. Because so many riders correctly placed their number on
the front of their helmet, rider identification will be much improved
over past years. When Brightroom has completed their compilation,
they will let all riders know by email. Here's a direct link to the
2009 Stagecoach Century on Brightroom's website.
Finally,
to all riders, from first-timer to loyal Shadow Tour veteran, our
personal invitation to join us for future events has no expiration
date. Next up, on Apr 4, '09, the good folks in Ocotillo, Shelter
Valley, and at Shadow Tour are preparing for you with an entirely
different Spring Stagecoach experience. You may use a special promocode "ST10" (all caps) online or mail-in to save $10 off any entry category. We hope you'll join us and help spread the word!
Most Respectfully,
Jim and Larry
