2.   Mission Valley Resort offers Stagecoach riders a special $69 p/t rate, based on availability.  Contact hotel for details.

3.    Gas:  There's only one gas station at the exit to Ocotillo.  Their prices are high.  Recommend refueling in San Diego or El Centro, depending on your direction of travel.

4.  Rest Stop Items:  Founder Larry will once again roll out his unique "Anti-bonk Buffet" at each rest stop.  There will be a wide variety of carbs, fluids, and other rider comfort items.  Click here for more details.  Substantial rest stops are a hallmark element for all Shadow Tour rides.

5.  Saturday Morning Arrival in Ocotillo:

     a.  Follow directions of volunteers from the 8 freeway
     b.  From the freeway, the Ocotillo Community Park is

8.  Included Lunch:  Subway Sandwiches, click for details.

9.  Key time cut-offs:

     12:15 P.M.   Scissors Crossing closes (mile 45)
1:00 P.M.     All riders must be returning to Ocotillo
1:15 P.M.      Lunch in Shelter Valley closes
     5:00 P.M.     Course officially closes

These time cut-offs are in place to assure riders are done and off S2 by 5:00 P.M.  Darkness sets in rapidly and temps fall dramatically in the desert.  These deadlines are mandatory.  All course support concludes at 5:00 P.M.

10.  FAQ's:  Please visit the FAQsection for more details.

11.  Ocotillo and Shelter Valley Volunteers: These small desert towns at the north and south ends of the course have been wonderful supporters of Stagecoach since the start. This year is their 8th Stagecoach (6 winter + 2 Spring). During difficult economic times, desert communities feel the squeeze more than most.  Community Fund donation boxes will be at the Start/Finish and Lunch Stop. Your completely optional donations are greatly appreciated. If you can help, a little goes a long way. Both communities are non-profit entities. Donations go directly to youth programs. Shadow Tour will continue making donations to both communities as well. Thanks to All!

PREVIOUS UPDATES (Nov and Dec):

1.  Rider Levels:
Rider LevelsThis new section on the website is a comprehensive resource for all riders.  Specific tips and advice are provided for a wide variety of rider levels.  You'll also find a detailed course description and details relating to weather, including past weather data.  Future updates will include rider comments and suggestions.  We strongly recommend reading it.

2.  Training:  Time to kick those New Year's resolutions into gear!  The early winter weather has been delightful for riding: cool mornings and mild afternoon temps in So Cal.  Continue building up for the ride by getting those training rides in.  With limited daylight, it's challenging during the week.  On weekends, shoot for rides of 2-4+ hours.

3.  Desert Weather:  Founder Jim rode the Stagecoach course on his birthday, Dec 21, '09.  Started at 5:59 A.M., temp was 49F.  Wore a light base layer + light arm warmers and was fine the whole way.  Finish temps in the mid 60's, with very mild winds.  Result was a lifetime Personal Best Stagecoach time of 4:48.  Hope for similar weather in Jan!

4.  Previous Stagecoach Weather

     2005:  Mild temps 50-70 F, mild winds 5-10 MPH,
                  Sunny and Warm
     2006:  Mild temps 48-65 F, sustained winds 10-12,
gusts to 25 MPH, Sunny. Warm, and Windy
     2007:  Cold temps 28-42 F, mild winds 5-10 MPH,
                  gusts to 15 MPH, Overcast/Some Sun /Cold
     2008:  Warm temps 48-74 F, mild winds 3-9 MPH,
gusts to 15 MPH, Sunny, breezy, and Warm
     2009:  Warm temps 45-82 F, mild winds 3-5 MPH,
gusting to 10 MPH, Sunny and Warm

5.  Bicycle Maintenance:  Stagecoach is no place to take a chance!  Every rider should have their bicycle tuned-up prior to the ride, along with a thorough safety inspection.  If tires are borderline, have them replaced, same for brakes.  You'll enjoy your ride more knowing your bike is mechanically ready.  We have posted bike shops in San Diego, Orange County, and LA on the website.  Some offer Stagecoach riders nice discounts, so be sure to ask!  See updated sponsor offers below.

6.  Friends and Family:  To limit vehicle traffic, promote safety, and comply with permit restrictions, outside support from friends and family in vehicles on S2 is not permitted anywhere on the course.  Friends and family are welcome to cheer at the Start/Finish in Ocotillo.  Picnic areas are available.

7.  Cholla Cactus:  One of the dominant desert cactus plants is the "Jumping Cholla".  These devilish plants are covered in thorny spines that detach and embed themselves in human flesh at the slightest touch.  DON'T GO NEAR OR LEAN BIKES AGAINST THEM!.  See photo below.

8.  Refer a Friend:  Stagecoach is a one-of-a-kind in many ways.  Our #1 source of new riders comes from previous riders telling their friends.  We are very proud and grateful of this fact.  For 2010, more than ever, we need you to encourage more riders to participate.

     a.  Facebook:  Below is a link to the new Stagecoach Facebook page.  You're invited to become a Fan of Stagecoach and invite your friends to join.  You can share stories, post photos, join discussions, and post to the wall.
