Dear Fiesta Riders,

Congratulations to all participants in this year's Ellsworth Fiesta Metric Century!  We send our sincere gratitude to all Riders, Sponsors, Communities, and Permitting Agencies involved with Fiesta.

A Special Thank You to Title Sponsor, Ellsworth Handcrafted Bicycles.  Tony Ellsworth and the whole Ellsworth crew rode or worked at the event. Check out their cool Fiesta special, see Sponsor Messages below for details.

Mother Nature served up a delightful late spring day, with cool early morning temps.  The marine layer gradually faded in the late afternoon, giving way to some sunshine on the coast and more sunny and warmer conditions inland.  Riders finishing after noon battled some pesky on-shore winds.

This year's Fiesta attracted a robust field of 470 riders of all skill levels.  There were riders from California, Arizona, New Mexico, Iowa, Nevada, New York, and Texas.  Even one all the way from India (the country!).  The field had 65% Male and 35% Female.  We're pleased to report that of the 314 Full Course riders, 288 started, and 241 completed the Full Metric Century.  That's a solid 84.3% finishing rate!  Click here to view the results.

If we missed recording you as a Full Century Finisher (and you registered for the Full Course) please accept our apology and email Jim with your name and Bib # in the subject line.  We'll remedy the oversight asap.

Regardless of the distance you rode, all riders earned bragging rights at this year's Fiesta.  Navigating through the Port and Shipyard stretch is always challenging.  Road improvements have been made, but several rough patches remain.  Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Cycling through the heart of the 8th largest metro area in the U.S. necessitates tradeoffs in order to enjoy the Peppertree lined Hunte Parkway and serene Otay Lakes views.   Post-ride, several riders reminded us about the tough roller hills on Otay Lakes Rd, in addition to the Mt. Miguel Rd 2-mi climb, all requiring some real effort!

Our compliments to each rider for exercising extra caution all along the routes.  There were no serious incidents or accidents.  Safety is always our #1 concern.  Thanks for your alert riding and for watching out for each other.  Great job using extra care crossing some tricky railroads and all along Otay Lakes Rd.  Expecting the unexpected is the name of the game while cycling on roadways.

For 1st wave riders, we appreciate your kind participation in the Nick Venuto Moment of Silence.  Nick was our friend who recently lost his life in a tragic and senseless crash involving a distracted driver while he was cycling home from work in San Diego.  Our thoughts and condolences go out to his wife Deb, son Nicholas (12) and daughter Marisa (8).  You may learn more about Nick at his Memorial website.

A special Thank You to wonderful volunteers from the San Diego So Cal Coasters (SCC) bicycle club.  They began their contribution to Fiesta at 4:45 A.M. on Fri, when 5 SCC vols marked the entire route.  With 40+ turns, they did a masterful job placing stickers, yellow arrows, barricade signs, and borrowed Caltrans warning signs all along the course.  Rest assured, marking the course to this high level required substantial effort and teamwork.  Back at the Finish Line, SSC and their kids handed out Finisher Medals and recorded Full Century Finishers. Another important task requiring continuous focus and attention.  Finally, at 2:00 P.M. on Sat, SCC boyz stacked heavy tables and 130 chairs in the expo area.  To learn more about the club, or to join, please visit their website.

We enjoyed many rider stories at the Finish Line.  One veteran Stagecoach rider, David Bruemmer, from Carlsbad, had a good one.  He had ridden the Solo Time Trial at Stagecoach in Jan, finishing 2nd Overall.   He thought there was also a TT at Fiesta (there wasn't).  He ended up posting an amazing solo 2:40 time for the Full Course.  Telling his story at the finish line, he said he "didn't push it too hard".  But the sweat dripping off his nose, soaked-through jersey, and breathless voice revealed otherwise.  Guys are funny that way!  Well done David.  But next time, Fiesta is a "Mellow Metric", relax & enjoy!

Sport Action Photos is hard at work matching helmet numbers on photos.  They expect to have them ready by Wed.  We'll post a message on the website and riders will receive an email when photos are ready. Armando is a skilled action photographer, who takes great pride in his craft.  He's also a class gent.  After Nick's death, Armando scoured through 1,000's of lost & found Stagecoach photos to locate extra photos of Nick to donate to his family.  One photo, of Nick happily climbing Cambell Grade, was used at the Memorial Service.  That's the kind of behind-the-scenes efforts we've come to expect from Armando and his crew.

Co-Founder Larry & Jim are constantly humbled by the many "Above & Beyond" contributions made by Shadow Tour sponsors, service providers, volunteers, and friends.  Matt from Traction Bicycles worked tirelessly out on the course to keep riders rolling, even helping riders not part of Fiesta!  Friends Bob Andrews and Emmet Holden also volunteered to cruise the course assisting riders.  They stopped to help a rider with a broken derailleur.  It was former Navy Seal and Ironman competitor, Mark Blore, from Coronado.  Unable to continue riding, Mark helped Bob & Emmet the rest of the day, changing several flats.  At the Rest Stops, World Cycles vol's staffed RS 2 and the Frank Family staffed RS 3, both for the 3rd year in a row.

Title Sponsor Ellsworth Handcrafted Bicycles staffed the demanding Rest Stop 1 and 4 at Plaza Bonita, working from 5:15 A.M. until 1:30 P.M. supporting riders in both directions.  Presenting Sponsor, Scripps Health, provided free Body Mass Index screening at their booth in the expo area.  El Indio Restaurant expertly catered a delicious Mexican Buffet, while Manny Cepeda provided continuous musical entertainment with his talented Salsa Band.
