Final Draft Guidelines:
Updated 9-24-07
These guidelines are the framework for the Salton Sea Century Four-Person 100 Mile Ultimate Team Time Trial (TTT). The Draft TTT Rules and Team Formation Process are now posted. As with any new extreme test of athletic endurance, this TTT will have safety as it's primary concern. The rules help insure not only a level playing field for all competitors, but a safe way to share the road with vehicles and other riders. So when in doubt, remember the Fireweed 400 motto: "Safety First, Fun Second, Success third".
The Salton Sea Century Team Time Trial is limited to FOUR-PERSON TEAMS riding together against the clock. This is NOT a relay, nor are relays permitted anywhere on the course. The number of official team entries is initially capped at 60. Teams start prior to individual Salton Sea Century riders. Each team needs to report in to the Timing Marshal at the Start Chute between 6:30 - 7:59 A.M. Teams will be started various intervals of at least 20 seconds, until the final team departs on or about 7:59 A.M. (depending on final field size). The venue capacity for teams is 360, which would mean starting one team every 20 seconds. Regardless of the number of teams, each team is individually responsible to be in position, with all team members, to start their TTT at the Starting Chute at their assigned time. The Timing Marshall and volunteers will assist teams by limiting access to the TTT Start Chute area to the next three teams in the start queue. Any final team composition adjustments may be made at this point. Team captains will communicate these changes to the Timing Marshall who then validate the final team composition on the official Team Roster Form and assign them a start time. Each team will then be counted down from 5 to their exact start time. Team start times are fixed. If a team arrives late to the start chute, their start time will not be adjusted, just like at the Tour De France. Teams arriving late will be permitted to start between two other teams at the discretion of the Timing Marshal and a Time Penalty will be levied. The TTT format is NO DRAFTING, except within and among members of individual four-person teams. This means teams may not draft other teams, nor individual riders, nor groups of individual riders, also just as in the Tour De France. The Salton Sea Century route is open to local vehicle traffic. Teams must obey all traffic laws at all times. That means when teams encounter a stop sign, the entire team must come to a full stop before proceeding. All team members must read and abide by the TTT Rules. Breaking traffic laws and/or navigating in an unsafe or aggressive manner will result in disqualification. For less serious rule infractions, time penalties will be levied by the Timing Marshal and Course Marshals.
Team Formation Process:
To form a team, each rider must first register individually for the 2007 Salton Sea Century and obtain a bib number. For the Salton Sea Century, there is no additional charge or fee for riding as part of a team. Each team will assign a team captain. The team captain needs to download the Team Roster (click here to download) and complete it with the team's name (maximum of 25 letters or numbers), division, age category, and rider composition (names, bib numbers, and ages). The complete team formation process is explained in more detail here.
Each team will be assigned an official team number and start time on a first come/first served basis. The team captain must bring their Team Roster Form for final review and validation by the Timing Marshal IN THE START CHUTE AREA. This allows teams flexibility to modify final team composition right up until they check-in with the Timing Marshal in the Start Chute Area. However, once a team starts, the team composition is locked and cannot be modified during the TTT. The official finish time for teams is based on the finish of the team's final rider, the clock does not stop on the course.
Teams are expressly prohibited from receiving any form of outside support. Specifically, teams may not receive any assistance from other outside riders, spectators or vehicles of any kind. Teams may employ various strategies for resupplying themselves with water and nutrition items at any of the organic rest stops provided for all Salton Sea Century riders. Upon crossing the finish line, each team needs to report to the Timing Marshal in the finish chute to receive their official finishing time along with a validation mark. Team Roster Forms will be reviewed and initialled by the Timing Marshal. The TTT Roster Forms will be verified by Course Marshals, checked for penalities/DQ (if any), and the top two fastest official finishing teams in each Division (by category and age group) will have their team name, time, individual names posted online in the Division Leaders section. The complete results will be posted by team name, hometown, and offical finishing time. Division Records will be permanently displayed on the Shadow Tour website. |
