Dear Fiesta Riders,

Congratulations to all participants in this year's Fiesta Metric Century!  We send our sincere gratitude to all Riders, Sponsors, Communities, and Permitting Agencies involved with Fiesta.

A Special Thank You to Luna Chix & The Breast Cancer Fund (Official Fiesta Metric Charity).  The San Diego Team Luna Chix Volunteers did a fabulous job staffing the difficult all-day Rest Stop #1 / #4, and their joint Breast Cancer Fund/Team Luna Chix booth at the Finish Line Expo.  Please be the first to show your appreciation by clicking on the Breast Cancer Fund Donation Link and making a tax-deductible donation to the Breast Cancer Fund.  We send our sincere "Thanks" to riders who have already donated, and to those who participated in the Silent Auction of Nite Rider light sets.  Nite Rider has recently signed on as a Series Sponsor at all Shadow Tour events.

Mother Nature served up a delightful late Spring day, with cool early morning temps.  The marine layer gradually thinned in the late afternoon, giving way to some sunshine near the coast and more sunny & warmer conditions inland.

Many of Shadow Tour's most Veteran riders were in the field.  Karen Finkelstein, & Courtney Krehbiel, from Carlsbad, CA, recorded their 21st Shadow Tour Full Course finish.  Veterans David Osterman, El Cajon, CA, and Big Dave Moser, Valley Center, CA, made it #13 and #12 respectively.  Other 10+ Shadow Tour riders included:  Paul Stoddard, Palm Desert, CA (11), Cheryl Lauridsen, Palm Springs, CA (11), George Bandy, San Diego, CA (11), and Carl Ebert, El Cajon. CA (10).

The Fiesta Metric Perfect Attendance list includes:

 Karen Finkelstein, Carlsbad, CA (5)
 Courtney Krehbiel, Carlsbad, CA (5)
 Richard Roche, Tombstone, AZ (5)
Tom Solomon, San Diego, CA (5)
Linda Knigge, La Quinta, CA (5)

It's likely more riders should be listed above.  During registration (Online & Mail-in) riders are asked for Previous Shadow Tour Rides and Previous Fiesta Metric Rides.  This data is kept on the Shadow Tour website and all riders are encouraged to research their participation numbers by viewing the Rider Lists page.

This year's Fiesta Metric Century attracted a spirited field of 360 riders of all skill levels.  There were riders from California (325), Arizona (19), Nevada (3), Ohio (3), Nevada (3), Illinois (2), Army Pacific (1), New Mexico (1), South Carolina (1), and Washington (1).  Riders also joined Fiesta from Australia (1), and Mexico (1).  The field had 64% Male and 36% Female.  We're pleased to report that of the 252 Full Course Registered Riders, 237 Rolled on Saturday, and 215 completed the Full Metric Century.  That's a solid 85.3% finishing rate! 2013 Fiesta Results are posted here.

Full Century Finisher Notes:

1.  Full Course Registered Riders who did not check in with the Finish Line Vol's, or if your name is missing from the Finishers List, please email Jim with your Name & Bib # in the Subject line.  We'll remedy the oversight asap.

2.  Finish Line Vol's recorded Bib #'s of 25 Short Course Registered Riders who stated they completed the Full Century course.  This is unacceptable!  In fairness to paid Full Course Registered Riders, all these Short Course riders need to pay the $15 upgrade fee before receiving credit for completing the Full Course.  Payment instructions are on the Full Century Finisher List

3.  The Full Century Finishers List will be updated thru COB Jun 15th. Results are finalized at COB Jun 15th.

Regardless of the distance or time ridden, all riders earned bragging rights at this year's Fiesta.  Navigating through the Port & Shipyards along Harbor Drive is always challenging.  This year, all riders safely rode the rough sections and tricky Railroad track crossings incident-free.
Thanks for your care & attention to safety!  Clearly, Fiesta riders were watching out for one anther by pointing out obstacles to riders following closely behind.   Bravo!

Cycling through the heart of the 8th largest Metro Area in the U.S. necessitates tradeoffs in order to enjoy the Peppertree-lined Hunte Pkwy and serene Otay Lakes views.  Post-ride, riders reminded us of higher inland temps, roller hills on Otay Lakes Rd, and the grueling Mt. Miguel Rd 1.8 mi climb, all requiring Real Effort. Congrat's!

Our compliments to each rider for exercising extra caution all along the routes.  Safety is always our #1 concern. Thanks for your alert riding, pointing out obstacles to each other, signalling your intentions, riding single file to the right of the road, and for watching out for each other. Expecting the unexpected is the name-of-the-game while cycling on public roadways.  One unexpected issue was the Full Course turn-around in the residential neighborhood.   At that T-intersection, Tim, Matt, and Jim positioned a turnaround sign & placed Route Arrows on the road.  Vandals/Thieves stole the sign and peeled off the Route Arrows.  Riders informed us post-ride of some confusion, but all were able to get back on the route.   We'll report the incident to Chula Vista Police and their Special Events Director, from whom we processed, and received, our Approved Permit.  Kudos to riders who knew the turn-around from previous Fiesta rides and informed first-timers to keep them on track!

SCS Photoworks is hard at work matching helmet numbers on photos. They expect to have them ready soon. We'll post a message on the website and riders will receive an email when photos are ready for purchase. Scott Stolarz is a highly skilled photographer, who takes great pride in his craft. His crew member, Jon, was at the Finish Line doing his best to capture every single finisher's photo.

Co-Founder Larry & Jim are always humbled by the many "Above & Beyond" contributions made by Shadow Tour Sponsors, Service providers, Volunteers, and Friends. Matt from Traction Bicycles worked tirelessly on the course keeping riders rolling.  Mark Zerega, Doe Asombrado, Michelle Thitathan, and Winston (the happy pup) ran Rest Stop #2.  Robin Gitman and dear friends Angelika Drake, Danielle Snider, and Betsy Smith worked Fri Packet pick-up & Sat Reg. Tent.  Two Volunteer crews were organized by Bike Shop Sponsor, Moment Cycle Sport; they assisted with Parking, Bike Corral Security, and Finish Line Support. Emily Miller, from Nite Rider, was on the early Parking Crew, along with retired Navy Capt. Jim.  Gloria Duarte, her Family & Friends staffed Rest Stop #3 (5th year in a row).

El Indio Restaurant expertly catered the delicious Mexican Buffet, while Manny Cepeda provided continuous musical entertainment with his talented Salsa Band Trio.  At his urging, Organizer Jim, Angelika, and Betsy enjoyed some Salsa Dancing to Santana's "Oye Como Va!"  For the record, Angelika & Betsy actually Salsa danced.  Jim's moves are under review.  Rebekah from First Aid Services of San Diego, Inc, returned to Fiesta and patrolled the entire route, treating 2 minor dehydrations and 1 minor nausea case.  No injuries were reported.

As always, please ride with extreme care out there.  Expect the unexpected.  Always be alert and ride single file, as far to the right as possible.   Give some thought to adding flashing front and rear lights, even during the day.  Being seen is half the battle!  Organizer Jim rode 15,000+ miles in 2012.   He counted on Nite Rider to widen the safety margin on every single mile!
