9th Annual 2013 Stagecoach Century
~~ and ~~
Solo/Tandem/Team Time Trials

Dear Sturdy Rider,

The 9th Annual Stagecoach Century Stampede is now part of Wild West history.  The 2013 Stagecoach will be remembered for some dire Deep Freeze forecasts.  While the extreme low 20's F temps did not materialize, weather assumed it's starring role, yet again, and most riders battled ornery cold & swirling headwinds most of the day out on the Great Southern Overland.

This Round-up email summarizes the 9th Annual Stagecoach Century.

We send our most sincere gratitude to all Stagecoach Riders, Vol's, and Sponsors. In particular, we thank the Desert Volunteers of Ocotillo for staffing the Start & Finish; and Shelter Valley Citizen's Corp Volunteers for staffing Rest Stops #3, #4, #5, and the Lunch Stop.  Thanks also go out to the San Diego/Hawaii Team in Training, Ride Angels, Desert Ministries, and Boy Scout Troops 208 & 319 at Rest Stop #1, and the San Diego Knickerbikers & So Cal Coasters, at Rest Stop #2.

We're pleased to report 605 Registered Riders accepted the Stagecoach challenge.  The field included riders from 14 States, including the sunny & warm states of MT, UT, CO, MN, PA, and WA.  There were also Sturdy riders from Alberto, Canada.

Despite the chill, 495 riders arrived on Saturday, with 446 Full Course and 49 Short Course rolling onto the course.  A remarkable 347, or 77.8%, completed the Full Century.  That number will likely rise.  Here's the link to the  Full Century Finishers List.  Riders who registered for the Full Century, completed it, but did not check in with the Timing Booth, or if your name is missing, please email Jim with your Bib#/Name in the subject line.  The Full Century Finishers List will be updated until Feb 1st, when the list is FINAL and no additions will be made.

Special Congrat's to Karen Finkelstein & Courtney Krehbiel, from Carlsbad, CA, on completing their 21st (of 22) Shadow Tour Century rides.  Other Sturdy Veteran Shadow Tour Full Century finishers included David Ostermann, El Centro, CA (12), Natalie Fennel, Irvine, CA (12), Rick Stewart, Vista, CA (10), Lauren Stearley, Chula Vista, CA (9), Jim Corriere, Brawley, CA (9), and Sumeet Mohan, Phoenix, AZ (9).  Rick Stewart extended his perfect attendance streak to 9 Stagecoach Centuries.  Rick is the only rider who has completed all January Stagecoach Centuries.  We were also honored to have 39 riders with 6 or more Shadow Tour rides and 298 with 1 or more previous Shadow Tour rides.

Regardless of distance ridden, or previous Shadow Tour participation, Congratulations to all Stagecoach riders on your personal achievement. This was a crazy-tough year to EARN IT!  Most distance cyclists have heard of Stagecoach; either by participation, or by intimidating reputation.  Fear & Respect ride side-by-side at Stagecoach.  2013 Riders knew this going in, and accepted the challenge head-on, with eyes wide open.

We know the feeling!  Arriving off the Interstate, seeing the Vol's with vests & flashlights directing traffic, then stepping out of your warm car into the biting pre-dawn cold in Ocotillo.  Brutal desert cold is every rider's worst fear.  Gutsy riders who rolled across the Start Line on Saturday stared directly into the eyes of the Beast.  This time, the Beast blinked first, with minimal wind and warmer-than-expected temps at the Start line.

We were impressed with the Resolve & Exceptional Esprit-de-Corps!  Riders heeded our warnings, dressed warmly, and did their homework ahead of time.  Many, possibly all, actually read the emails & Final Rider Instructions...Bravo!  Riders pointed out hazards and rode (mostly!) single file and well to the right.  Despite the 2nd coldest Stagecoach (2007 Big Chill was worse) there was a fantastic Full Century 77% Finish rate AND NO MAJOR INCIDENTS OR ACCIDENTS!

Conditions at Stagecoach have never been "easy" and likely never will be.  If the cold didn't get to you, the dry desert air, maddening swirly winds, micro-bursts, wind devils, were all out there, chipping away.  The course itself is a tough 100-mile route with 4,685 feet of climbing, in mid-Jan, when few riders are in peak form.  There was the freezing early 10.5-mile climb up to Canyon Sin Nombre & the Carizzo Badlands Overlook.  Then that gnarly Campbell Grade "Wall" at mile 29, followed by a grinder climb up to the highest point on the ride, 2,685 ft el, past Box Canyon.  The San Felipe Grade took it's toll for 4.4 miles to the turnaround point.  Then came the downright nasty Sweeney Pass Climb with it's hairpin turn at mile 87.  Finally, like a sweet desert, came the always fun, bone-rattling, 95th mile.  Ugggg!

Yet, all of this is what makes Stagecoach special and even more Worthwhile & Rewarding.  The Stagecoach Finishers Medal can only be EARNED with enormous Determination, Commitment, and Effort.  Coincidentally, the very same traits associated with success in all walks of life.  We hope Stagecoach will rank as one of your most memorable and positive 2013 cycling experiences.

The Stagecoach Time Trial was timed using high tech timing chips by CEP Timing.  Owner Jason Kornetsky, Official Timer of the El Tour de Tucson, was personally onsite to time the event.  Jason also timed the recent 2012 Palm Desert Century.  Preliminary Results are posted here.  Results go Final on Fri, Jan 18, '13.

There were fireworks in the Solo Division with stunning new Course Records posted by both the Men's and Women's Overall Champions!  On the Women's side,  Lina Ramos-Holm stampeded her way through the course, lowering the Course Record set by Tracy Tilton in 2012 (5:58:40), with a sparkling time of 5:36:29.  She did this despite stopping to take photos with her husband on the route.  The Win & Course Record were made even more special because Saturday was Lina's Birthday!

On the Men's side, Dana Skriver never looked back.  Even the Ocotillo plants were impressed!  He gapped down an already solid Course Record, set by Dan McGehee in 2011 (4:37:20), with his Winning time of 4:27:16.  Dana is a Cat 2 Pro Cyclist, who's specialty is difficult long time trials.  He told us at the finish line that he was concerned about water, so he carried 2 full bottles, plus a full 70-oz Camelbak.  In the end, he didn't use any of the Camelbak water, but carried the extra 70 ounces the entire 100 Miles.  Magnificent effort Dana!

Preliminary Team results are now posted.  Final standings will be Official by COB Friday.

SCS Photoworks was the official event photographer.  They are diligently matching thousands of rider photos to Bib #'s.  They expect most photos to be ready by early Wed evening, or worst case, Thu morning.  Photos may be purchased by visiting this website.  Riders will also receive email notification when photos are ready.  If you don't see photos posted under your Name or Bib #, try visiting the photo Lost & Found.  Many times #'s blow off, or are unreadable in the various light conditions.  If you poke around in the Lost & Found, you'll probably find more photos of your semi-frozen smile :)

Last Chance for Stagecoach Jerseys!  You EARNED IT, now's your chance to wear the colors.  The 2nd Production Run of 2013 Stagecoach Jerseys will be sent to Voler at COB on Fri, Jan 18, '13.  If you wish to place an order, please download the Credit Card Authorization Form, complete, and fax to 858-356-9596 by 5:00 P.M. Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund:  There's also still time to make a Donation to the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund.  It's easier than you think.  Just click on the Donation Link and it will provide a secure gateway to make a donation of any amount. It's fast & easy, only takes a couple minutes.  Totally painless.  And after you donate, you'll feel great about it! This is your chance to help our severely injured Marines.  Some will carry the scars of their brave service for life.  They sacrificed much, now they need our help to cope with the difficult path to recovery.

Our Marines have asked for nothing.  But Shadow Tour IS ASKING! Please open your hearts to these fine young Americans and contribute whatever you can, even $5 helps.  The 2013 Stagecoach campaign has been a little light, less than $200, compared to the impressive 2012 results of over $4,000.  Let's show our thanks and get the total number above $2,000!   We extend our most sincere gratitude to Stagecoach riders, friends, and family members who have supported this fund-raising campaign!

Next up on the Shadow Tour ride calendar is a brand new event:  the Inaugural Spring Rush Century in Palm Desert on Sat, Mar 23, '13.   This is a Spring version of our existing popular Palm Desert Century in Nov.  Same course, just in delightful spring weather.  Registration is now open and "Best Deal" prices end on Jan 31st, so jump in there and get registered now!

Also coming up is the 5th Annual Fiesta Metric Century on Sat, Jun 8, '13.  The Fiesta Metric is at the opposite end of the Stagecoach intensity scale.  It's a family-oriented Mellow Summer Ride, with a Start and Finish in Downtown San Diego, by the Bay.  The ride visits the waterfront, Bonita, Chula Vista, Otay Lakes, and Jamul on an easy out-and-back course.  There are discount coupons for both rides at the bottom of this email.  Sign up to day and Save!

Referrals:  Stagecoach is a unique event in many ways.  Our #1 source of new riders comes from previous riders telling their friends.  We are very proud of this.  For 2013, more than ever, we need your referrals to encourage more riders to participate in Shadow Tour century rides.  Please forward this email to any of your friends who may be interested in joining one of our rides.

A most sincere, "Thank You" and "Congrat's" to all hearty 2013 Stagecoach Riders.  We're already hard at work preparing for the Inaugural Spring Rush Century in Palm Desert.  We hope to see all of you on the Start Line on Sat, Mar 23, '13 in Palm Desert!

One final piece of news.  It's our sad duty to report the passing of longtime Ocotillo resident Jimmy Ray Jones on January 2nd, 2013.  Jimmy was one-of-a kind. He was the original Ocotillo Volunteer who helped put Stagecoach on the map.  He was a Mountain of a Man, who lived a Full & Remarkable Life.  Jimmy was a Champion, winning the Baja 1000 off road race twice.  Jimmy wasn't at Stagecoach, but his Indomitable Spirit and Presence were felt by all who Knew, Respected, and Loved him.  Rest in Peace Jimmy.
